Why do I help? How do I help? What impact does my help have? And above all: How do I feel about it? Accompanying someone who suffers from depression or burnout is not a sprint; it is a marathon with some highs and many lows. This demands strength and endurance from family members. Most importantly, it requires a self-understanding of how they want to deal with the suffering of their loved one and their own. The interplay of mindfulness, compassion, and self-care can be a valuable support in this process. When family members maintain contact with themselves, their needs, feelings, and sources of strength, they will be better able to sense the limits of their responsibility. They can then use this awareness to guide their actions: in doing, not doing, and accepting.
