Actually, the revolution should be made, not editing, distribution or PR: more by chance than intentionally, Hanna Mittelstädt, Lutz Schulenburg and Pierre Gallissaires entered publishing in the early 1970s. At the time, their concept of freedom included the emancipative attitude of the post-68 impulse and the exploration of new forms beyond "political work", "political literature". It was about the richness of desire, knowledge, autonomy.
Ten years after Lutz Schulenburg's sudden death on 1 May 2013, Hanna Mittelstädt looks back at the first forty years of Nautilus and evokes the early days of the publishing house in numerous documents and photos and found objects from the publishing correspondence of companions and comrades-in-arms.
It tells of the recordings of the only LP in the history of the publishing house, of the legal dispute with a satirical magazine over the name of the publishing house, of procuring manuscripts through the Iron Curtain and over prison walls, of exhausting disputes over rights and money, of the ever circling vulture of bankruptcy, of personal doubts and finally of the fairytale success of the best-selling million-seller.
A large pile of books has come together in the course of this adventure, each copy a small chance for social and individual change. The world would be a better place if they had all been read.
