Known processes in cells that lead to cell death are described in these two volumes. Readers are encouraged to think beyond pure apoptosis. This two-volume work on cell death is the first comprehensive compendium that explains all known processes of cell death and is the only specialized book that compares these processes. The aim is to present the countless pathways and to prompt readers to consider these routes as well when signs of the classical apoptotic process are not evident. Furthermore, processes are interconnected and contrasted, such as the molecular biology of one process (for example, necrosis) with that of another process (for example, apoptosis). Volume 1 of "Apoptosis and Beyond: The Many Ways Cells Die" initially provides a general overview of the cytoplasmic and nuclear characteristics of apoptosis.
