Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach wrote with the conviction that her words could change the thoughts of her time. Her aphorisms, in which she pointedly and often ironically formulates her view of the world, testify to her astuteness, her knowledge of human nature and her self-confidence as a woman. "A clever woman has millions of born enemies: - all stupid men", is one of her insights.
