Product details
The authors lay the groundwork to make the discussions in Germany about positions on Jewish life, Israel, and Palestine comprehensible. In the first part, they explore why these debates are conducted with such intensity in this country. The historical development of the region serves as the foundation for the Palestine conflict. The second part locates the causes of the conflict—not only in the founding of the State of Israel in 1948 but also long before that, in the second half of the 19th century—highlighting the emerging Zionism and various waves of Jewish immigration. The third part focuses on the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement, which, as a civil society initiative, has been striving since the beginning of this millennium to find a new approach to the Palestinian-Jewish antagonism beyond Hamas and Abbas. At the same time, the authors examine how this conflict affects freedom of expression in the USA and Germany and how Israel is doing everything to combat this movement and discredit it as antisemitic. In the final part of the book, they investigate how to deal with the accusation of Israel-related antisemitism and the resulting restrictions on freedom of expression in Germany. In their detailed study, the authors aim to revive both the vision of a binational state proposed by Jewish philosopher Hannah Arendt and that of Palestinian Orientalist and founder of postcolonial studies Edward Said. Numerous photos, diagrams, and tables facilitate access to the topic.
