Anti.gone

In 2023, the Munich Kammerspiele took an important step that was both celebrated and criticized: they presented the ancient material as the first major German stage to adapt it as an inclusive play in easy language. "Anti·gone," translated into easy language by Anne Leichtfuss and a team of editors, is now available as a book with illustrations by the artist Tanja Geis and a foreword by director Nele Jahnke. The translation is based on the 2,400-year-old text by Sophocles as well as scenes from Jean Anouilh's 1946 adaptation. Developed in collaboration with individuals with Down syndrome and an editorial team, who reviewed Leichtfuss's text according to the rules for easy language, "Anti·gone" is more than just a straightforward translation. Instead, it has become an independent version with an alternative ending. The concise sentences are read with anticipation and focus, while also providing a sense of ease in understanding the text. The short, clear sentences in the dialogues bring the characters' personalities to the forefront, their conflicts are laid bare, and "Anti·gone" illustrates how relevant the major questions of Greek dramas remain today.
