Product details
In recent decades, the globally increasing demand for raw materials has amplified the influence of the mining industry on international politics and economics. However, it is often overlooked that mining, in addition to its undeniable economic benefits, represents a significant intrusion into nature and thus inevitably leads to ecological and social changes. Papua New Guinea is significantly affected by this. Since gaining independence in 1975, the country has focused on advancing its development through large-scale mining projects. This book examines the socio-ecological impacts of this controversial policy through the lens of Political Ecology, using the new Ramu Nickel Mine as a case study. The nickel and cobalt project is one of the largest in the world and has been under construction since 2006. The main owner, a Chinese mining corporation, plans to begin production by the end of 2009. Particularly considering the consequences of previous mining projects in the country, sustainable development and the population of Papua New Guinea appear to be at great risk.
