"Asparagus in Africa" is a quiet, personal narrative that balances between melancholy and irony, a monologue disguised as a dialogue, portraying the wordy yet speechless confrontation of a caring son with his weary 90-year-old father, who lies in a hospital bed and is nearing death. The son senses that he too is growing older and will eventually take his father's place in the generational line. During what may be their last encounter, both touch upon the theme of nurturing and being nurtured as a universal human need. Shared memories of meals help them find common ground where it seems impossible to verbalize their own feelings and needs. "What do you lack, Father?" I ask him, and I provide the answer myself: "Nothing, of course. You have everything you need.".
