Another reality

"Another Reality" is the account of the second encounter of anthropologist Carlos Castaneda with the Indian medicine man and sorcerer Juan Matus during the years 1968-1970. Despite his decision to end his apprenticeship with Don Juan, as his teachings gradually threatened to shake his accustomed worldview, Castaneda returned to Don Juan in 1968, marking the beginning of the second cycle of his apprenticeship. Don Juan's primary focus now is to teach his student the art of "seeing" - a form of perceiving the world that he distinguishes from our usual way of "looking," which enables a "knower" to recognize the essence of things. To achieve this perception, the learner must view every moment of their life as practice, dismantling ingrained ways of seeing and behaving - in this respect, Don Juan's teachings strikingly resemble the methods of nearly all traditional esoteric disciplines.
