Anni und Josef Albers

The legendary artist couple and design in the twentieth century. Josef and Anni Albers are considered pioneers of 20th-century modernism. The couple met in the early 1920s at the newly founded Bauhaus school in Weimar. Josef Albers had already visited the Bauhaus in 1920 to explore the relationships between art, architecture, and craftsmanship at this avant-garde institution. Eleven years younger, Anni Albers joined the weaving department in 1922, which was then the only one open to women. The couple married in 1925. This marked the beginning of decades of artistic and intellectual exchange that continually inspired each other's creativity, though it never led to direct artistic collaboration.
