Koan collection

This anthology contains three important collections of koans. The Shûmon kattôshû was first published in Japan in 1689 and fully in 1858, and it is part of the koan training of the Takuju branch of the Rinzai school. Its editor is unknown. It contains 282 koans (including variations of individual koans), some of which are derived from the well-known collections Wumenguan, Bi Yan Lu, and Conrong Lu, which have already been translated into German. All koans not listed in these collections are now brought together here for the first time in German. The Tetteki tôsui, literally "Blowing the Flute Standing on the Head," was previously published in Germany in the 1960s and 70s as "Iron Flute" with comments by Nyôgen Senzaki. We offer a new translation of this koan collection compiled by Genrô Ôryû in 1783.
