ANGLES OF GHOST STREET - There are 45 million widows living in India. It was not long ago that in certain regions of India, a widow was expected to die at the stake with her dead husband. That is history, but widows still suffer severe discrimination for the rest of their lives. Two years ago, in the tradition of Gandhi, Indian social reformer Dr Bindeshwar Pathak began to take up the challenge of countering these deeply entrenched notions. In Ghost Street in New Delhi, he opened a house for widows where they can once again find meaning for their existence. There they have the opportunity to learn how to read and write and to learn a trade.
