Angela Yvonne Davis (January 26, 1944, in Birmingham, Alabama) is an American civil rights activist, philosopher, social scientist, and writer who became a symbol of the movement for the rights of political prisoners in the 1970s. Additionally, she was the candidate of the Communist Party USA for the U.S. vice presidency in 1980 and 1984, following Gus Hall.
