Aneignung und Selbstbehauptung

The contributions in this volume examine the reactions of non-European peoples to the challenges posed by European expansion. The focus is on which aspects of European culture were adopted and in which areas non-European cultures asserted themselves. The thematic complex presented in this volume ranges from personal-level interactions to the emergence of press and public spheres, as well as the development and transformation of non-European trade networks. It becomes clear that European lifestyles and behaviors were by no means universally and uniformly adopted; rather, there are still significant differences shaped by the respective contexts.
