The friendly, almost affectionate image of people engaged in a tough struggle with the expectations and norms of societal existence – often with little success, overwhelmed, and using inappropriate, questionable means – characterizes the films of Andreas Dresen (*1963). No matter how grotesque the situations may appear, the characters never become zombies; they invite viewers into a multifaceted subjective space of participation. This is evident in 'Gundermann' (2018), which partially takes place in the GDR, as well as in 'Halbe Treppe' (2002) and 'Willenbrock' (2005), which tell stories from the precarious post-reunification period, but also in 'Nachtgestalten' (1999), 'Sommer vorm Balkon' (2005), or 'Wolke 9' (2008), where this background is less defining. The films are often described as having a documentary quality. Carefully chosen locations and settings, improvisations during filming, and the use of handheld cameras support this impression. They suggest a lack of staging, even though it is the means of a thoughtful staging that finds its final rhythm in editing and moves both the mind and emotions.
