Ancient Buddhist places of worship in Chinese Turkistan

The author Albert Grünwedel (1856-1935) was an Indologist, Tibetologist, and archaeologist who organized two of the four German Turfan expeditions. He had been working as an assistant at the Museum of Ethnology in Berlin since 1881. In 1883, he was promoted to deputy director of the museum's ethnological collection and Scandinavian antiquities. In 1891, he received an honorary professorship from the University of Berlin for his numerous publications on Buddhist art, the archaeology of Central Asia, and the languages of the Himalayas. Under the influence of the research work of his Russian colleagues, Grünwedel organized the first German Turfan expedition himself from 1902 to 1903, which primarily worked in Idiqutsahri.
