Anabasis

Xenophon's "Anabasis" is to Greek studies what Caesar's "De bello Gallico" is to Latin studies: a central reading material. For historians, the work is an important source for the period after the Peloponnesian War, when Greek mercenaries were hired in the Persian East to support Cyrus in his struggle for the Persian throne. However, the military campaign in 401 BC fails – and the Greeks suddenly find themselves alone in enemy territory. The dangerous task of leading the soldiers home was taken on by Xenophon, the author of this account. The established translation by Helmuth Vretska, valued for its readability, has been carefully updated linguistically for this edition and includes a new afterword.
