The First World War captivated all world powers. On the front lines and at home, the warring nations made unparalleled efforts. With significantly increased production and comprehensive mobilization, they sought to force success on the battlefield. This led to a transformation of the armed forces and combat strategies, as well as a totalization of warfare involving entire national societies and their cultures. After the war, political and military elites drew 'lessons of war' of varying depth. The societal processing and commemoration of this war were equally intense and contentious.
