American primer for adult Germans
GermanProduct details
This book is a new edition of the highly regarded pamphlet from 1946 about the historical background of American occupation policy ("An Attempt to Explain the Unexplained"). It includes unpublished photos taken by Margret Boveri in the USA in 1940/41, as well as a review published by the future first Federal President Theodor Heuss in the Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung. Margret Boveri focuses on two elements of American occupation policy: the high regard for emigration and re-education, demonstrating that both can only be understood in the context of the origins of the United States. Boveri identifies the main accusation from the Americans as the fact that the Germans did not become "pilgrims" in large numbers, and sees re-education as originally a necessarily rigid form of internal American assimilation.
