In 1919, the social democratic city government of Vienna initiated a reform program to shape the infrastructure according to socialist ideals. The centerpiece of "Red Vienna" was the Viennese municipal buildings, 400 urban housing blocks that provided living space for one-tenth of the city's population, distributed throughout the city. However, during the construction campaign, Austria was governed by a conservative-clerical, anti-socialist majority. In her book, Eve Blau demonstrates how this ideological conflict shaped the buildings of Red Vienna, how the architecture employed its own codes, practices, and history to distinguish its position in relation to the political framework. The book, which has long been a standard work in architectural and art historical education, is now available for the first time in German translation.
