With Luther on the Wartburg and with Berlichingen on a raid... The author of the bestseller "When Germany Was Not Yet Germany" presents a follow-up: A time travel into Luther's Germany. Martin Luther had been lying in his coffin in the Wittenberg Castle Church for just over a year when, in the spring of 1547, the scaffolding was removed from the towers of his old preaching church, the St. Mary's City Church. Cannons were to be hoisted onto the cleared platforms to deter the Landsknechte of Charles V from storming the city. Ultimately, the city was surrendered peacefully; Wittenberg was not plundered. Luther's corpse was not exhumed and burned to enforce the imperial ban against him posthumously—although there were voices calling for this. The towers received new spires—and only half a millennium later (during restoration work).
