The route from Freiburg (CH) to Canterbury (GB) corresponds to the return journey of the Via Francigena, established a thousand years ago by Archbishop Sigeric. Embracing the unexpected nature of chance and the urge of curiosity, the author follows this oldest documented route through Europe. From his hometown, he wanders through regions of the Jura, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, Grand Est, Hauts-de-France, and Kent. Along rivers and canals, he traverses idyllic landscapes, enjoys delicacies of France, and pauses at battlefields. From his 900-kilometer long hike, he describes the gentle compulsion of the everyday as well as the allure of the extraordinary, the hours of happiness and solitude, of contemplation and deprivation, until he achieves a sense of calm, coming to terms with his doubts.
