The number and variability of viruses is immense. However, they all share the common trait of relying on a living cell for replication. Therefore, viruses have developed efficient strategies to overcome cell membranes and hijack the macromolecule synthesis mechanisms inside the cell for their own replication. At the same time, they must manipulate the extensive defense mechanisms of the host so that the replication cycle can be completed with the release of viral progeny. The newly synthesized viruses can then spread further within the host and jump to new hosts or entire populations.
