Product details
Alcohol prevention for the protection of children is a guide that highlights the burdens faced by children growing up in families with alcoholics. Dependency, co-dependency, and the promotion of addiction through entrenched societal thought patterns form a fatal triad that makes alcoholism a transgenerational problem. This is a necessary and overdue book for the mental health of the youngest and most vulnerable members of our society. Through conventional alcohol prevention and self-help measures for addiction, alcoholics are often portrayed as unfortunate individual cases. The same happens to the children who grow up under these conditions, starting their adult lives with numerous traumas. A learning effect that counters traditional alcoholism cannot occur in this way. All affected individuals need the opportunity to reflect on what has happened in order to make self-determined decisions for their lives. Alcohol-dependent and co-dependent individuals should be given the chance to take responsibility for their actions and their families, to work towards a happy sobriety, and to come to terms with themselves. Society should question whether alcohol is truly indispensable and belongs everywhere and at all times, or if a sober life should be considered an equally valid option. One in five children grows up with alcoholic parents, and nearly every second child lives in a family where binge drinking and risky drinking are part of everyday life. New thought patterns that hold the entire society accountable could pave the way for fair alcohol prevention and inclusive self-help for addiction. This could also include self-help groups for children, where they can share their burdens and experiences to break free from transgenerational repetitions.
