The Charlemagne window for Charlemagne is, along with the Charlemagne shrine of Aachen, the most important work of art created for Charlemagne. Here he is depicted as emperor and saint at the same time. To the people of the Middle Ages, he was alive through legends and poetry told over and over again. In Chartres, a special monument was erected to him and his biography was rewritten. Sophia-Janet Aleemi now retells it picture by picture and explains in a knowledgeable and fascinating way those long forgotten backgrounds, but also some contexts that have never been considered.
