Agnes de Mille once wrote: "The truest expression of a people is found in their dance and music. Bodies never lie." This expression perfectly captures the concepts presented in this report about the Ogu people in the Nigerian state of Lagos and their indigenous culture. The vast majority of the people had cultural traits that were both distinctive in their conception and expression before the advent of modernity and its resulting impacts. These traits reflect so much about the culture of the people and can be expressed through their body movements, choreographic patterns, rhythmic accompaniments, clothing, accessories, and more. The Akoto dance is one of the many cultural expressions of the Ogu people. The cultural heritage and stylistically patterned choreographic movements captured in the dance signals and artistically expressed testify to the existence of the socio-economic, aesthetic, cultural, and historical realities of the Ogu people. This study was conducted to evaluate the socio-cultural testimonies expressed by the Ogu people in the Akoto dance and to document the dance before it is completely erased by the various processes and phases of modernity.
