Adept (from Latin adeptio, meaning attainment or acquisition, or adeptus - one who has attained something) is the term for a person or student who is initiated into a secret doctrine, secret science, or mysteries. In a broader sense, it refers to someone who has been deeply instructed in an art or science by a master, who has studied their teachings, and can demonstrate knowledge of their philosophy and insights. An important term in alchemy: here, the designation Adept was used for those individuals who had discovered the secret of creating the Philosopher's Stone or at least were theoretically familiar with its creation through extensive study of ancient texts.
