For 14 years, from 1949 to 1963, Konrad Adenauer served as Chancellor and played a decisive role in shaping the founding and development years of the Federal Republic of Germany. To this day, he enjoys a good reputation as a person and politician, and holds a high standing in the public eye far beyond our borders. This can largely be attributed to his professionally good relationship with journalists, whom he also knew how to utilize for his purposes. In particular, he appreciated the cartoonists who eagerly made him the subject of their satirical art. This richly illustrated volume brings the Adenauer era, the 1950s and 60s, back to life. The then-world cartoonist Wilhelm Hartung creates a multifaceted portrait of the first Chancellor and humorously and critically portrays him with his pencil. Two introductory essays and extensive accompanying texts invite readers to embark on an entertaining journey through time that leads directly into the present. Surprisingly relevant, in light of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, Hartung's cartoons shed light on Adenauer's political actions and the historical dimension of his commitment to peace and freedom in Europe.
