Achim Exner (born December 1, 1944, in Breslau) is a graduate economist and former mayor. Exner served as the mayor of the state capital Wiesbaden from 1985 to 1997. He has two daughters. Exner has been a member of the SPD since 1966. He studied economics at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz from 1967 to 1972. From 1972 to 1975, he worked in Wiesbaden for a tenant protection organization. In 1985, he was elected mayor of Wiesbaden by the city council. Shortly after his re-election by the council in 1991, he took a six-month parental leave, becoming the first mayor in Germany to do so. All his successors are now elected directly rather than by the city council.
