Maria feels unloved by her birth mother. The promise of a better life comes only with her "adoption" - in Sardinia of that time, however, combined with the obligation to return this affection in old age. And something else is unusual: Where does the "foster mother" disappear to at night? Is she an 'accabadora' who makes it easier for others to die? The existence of this figure beyond the myth is disputed, but still anchored in people's minds.
