For children with difficulties in arithmetic, moving away from counting-based calculations is a crucial step towards successful math learning. The authors first present the development and significance of counting as a gateway to mathematics. In addition to the essential aspects of transitioning from counting-based calculations, they explain the concept of integrated instructional support. The core of this practical guide consists of 20 support units that can be implemented throughout the first and/or at the beginning of the second school year, either alongside regular lessons or in a compact format with the entire class. These units allow for a high degree of differentiation and are designed so that children who rely on counting can gain fundamental insights while other children simultaneously deepen their understanding of mathematical structures. The support is carried out in cooperative settings (partner work) to ensure that children learn not in isolation but together, communicating about mathematical concepts and developing new insights.
