The phenomenon of disability has gained increased international attention, especially since the adoption of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2006. Worldwide, discussions about the treatment of stigmatized norm deviations are framed around the keyword inclusion. The extent to which disability can be conceptualized in parallel with other diversity categories such as race, class, or gender remains an open question. This handbook illuminates the complex research area of representations of disability, primarily from the perspective of cultural studies, and offers both systematic approaches from various disciplines as well as historical overviews. Four axes of reading structure the handbook: representations of disability in practice and theory, the history of representations of disability, cultural studies thematic fields, and forms of representation and expression.
