Winston Smith lives in a totalitarian society that monitors its citizens without exception. Big Brother hears and sees everything; all virtues have lost their value and have been turned into their opposites. Those who do not conform to the norms are either taken away by the secret police or simply disappear without a trace. However, Winston feels that this monitored existence cannot be all there is and begins to oppose it.
