Product details
In the Orwellian state, a new language is mandated, known as Newspeak. Along with the so-called Doublethink, it aims to condition people away from independent thought. Orwell powerfully illustrates how the alteration of language can open the door to the manipulation of the populace by the ruling class. This becomes particularly evident when the most inhumane aspects of a system are cloaked in euphonious names. For instance, there is a Ministry of Love. It does not promote loving interactions among people; rather, it teaches dissenters and nonconformists to love Big Brother through the most brutal torture methods. In the Ministry of Truth, history and the present are adjusted to fit the current political system. What is true is defined as what Big Brother declares to be true. The populace is made to understand that everything has always been as it is now. Any contradictory information is systematically removed from magazines and books, and thus from the memory of the people. Conversely, the Ministry of Peace plans peace missions that are nothing more than military operations. Who would be surprised to find that behind pleasure camps lie forced labor camps of the worst kind?.
