Half a million people pass through Mozart's birthplace every year, and the city is in a state of emergency, especially during the summer festival season. Yes, Salzburg is very much centred around music.
Anyone strolling through the city will notice that it is characterised by high baroque, but also medieval architecture. For a long time, the city was also known as the 'Rome of the North'. Archbishops in high-necked cassocks, with severe wigs and conscious of their dignity, were in charge. They had the city's development at heart and were constantly building a prestigious residence. The wealth and power of the Salzburg archbishops contributed to the splendour of the city and created a timeless beauty. UNESCO has included the historic city centre in its World Heritage List. Salzburg is, as the writer Alfred Komarek writes, a 'work of art pleasing to God'.
