Product details

For 100 years, the subject of Ancient History has been taught and researched at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. Considering the time periods that the subject deals with, this is only a modest span, but for those involved, it represents a long and typically significant phase of their academic careers. Renowned researchers and educators - Robert (von) Pöhlmann, Ulrich Wilcken, Walter Otto, Helmut Berve, Alexander Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg, Siegfried Lauffer, Hermann Bengtson, Hatto H. Schmitt, and Christian Meier - have profoundly shaped the character of the field over these hundred years, particularly in the areas of Greek history, Hellenistic history, and, since Siegfried Lauffer, also in social and economic history. It was fortunate for the field that, aside from Ulrich Wilcken and Helmut Berve, all professors spent their final years of academic activity here, remaining connected to the university for many years.

The individual contributions focus on the teaching and research activities, especially during the Munich period. The challenging time after the death of Walter Otto is discussed in detail, particularly regarding the reappointment of the chair in the late phase of the Nazi regime with Helmut Berve, and after the end of the war, the reconstruction and reappointment of the chair with Graf Stauffenberg. Christian Meier and Jakob Seibert describe their own activities, while the two new chairholders, Jens-Uwe Krause and Martin Zimmermann, provide an outlook on the future of the field and their research. An overview of the institutional development introduces the volume.
