The mobile phone is only needed to set the alarm (time, alarm, light colour). You can switch off the mobile phone completely afterwards. However, the alarm clock's Blutooth seems to run continuously. The mobile phone is only needed again when the power is disconnected from the alarm clock to set the time again. It does not have a backup battery.
