On October 3, 2022, the 300th birthday of Johann Heinrich Tischbein the Elder (1722–1789) will be celebrated. The cultural foundation of the House of Hesse is using this milestone to dedicate a monographic exhibition to the most significant representative of the famous Hessian painter dynasty Tischbein at the Museum Schloss Fasanerie near Fulda. A focus of the exhibition is on Tischbein's role as court painter to three Hessian landgraves in Kassel. In 1753, Johann Heinrich the Elder was appointed court painter by Landgrave Wilhelm VIII of Hesse-Kassel and remained in this position throughout the reign of Friedrich II (1760–1785). Although Tischbein was already ill at the beginning of Wilhelm IX's reign, he continued to serve as court painter, and the landgrave established a posthumous gallery of his paintings at Schloss Wilhelmshöhe. However, the painter received commissions not only from members of the Kassel court; he also created numerous portraits for Prince Karl August of Waldeck and Pyrmont and decorated his residence in Bad Arolsen with paintings. Additionally, Tischbein portrayed his own family and was sought after by bourgeois patrons beyond the court and residence. Besides portraits, the catalog features landscape paintings by Johann Heinrich Tischbein the Elder, including important views of the castle on the Weissenstein (the predecessor of Schloss Wilhelmshöhe in Kassel) and the surrounding 18th-century parklands.
