The tropical tonka tree produces fruits with highly aromatic black seeds, known as tonka beans. The essential oil extracted from these beans, which has a high coumarin content and a characteristic sweet caramel scent, serves as a warm-oriental base in many perfumes. In South American tradition, tonka is also used for insect repellent.
