Lake Lugano, also known as Ceresio or Luganersee in German, is a lake located in southern Switzerland and Italy. It spans nearly two-thirds in the canton of Ticino and a good third in the Italian Lombardy. With an area of 30 km² in Swiss territory (a total of 48.7 km²), Lake Lugano is the tenth largest lake in Switzerland. The lake is situated at an elevation of 271 meters above sea level. The maximum depth of Lake Lugano is 288 meters.

Lake Maggiore is a narrow, curved, and branched lake that flows from north to south. It covers an area of 212.5 km², with 19.9% in the north belonging to Switzerland and 80.1% to Italy. The lake stretches from the southern Alpine chain to the western edge of the Po Valley. Lake Maggiore is 64.37 km long and up to 10 km wide. The average lake level is 193 m above sea level, making it the lowest point in Switzerland. The greatest depth is 372 m, meaning the lakebed reaches up to 179 m below sea level.

The catchment area of Lake Maggiore covers 6,386 km², with 3,326 km² in Switzerland and 3,060 km² in Italy.
