I am considering changing the drum unit because I keep getting fine magenta-coloured cross-stripes on the printout. Does anyone know if this could be due to the drum?

I would first carefully clean the drum unit and the transport unit with a damp cloth.

Yes, that can be, we had the same problem. After changing the drum, it was fine again. But I am not a specialist.
