The Brunswick Residential Palace: from ducal seat to cultural centre.
Das Residenzschloss Braunschweig
German, Bernd Wedemeyer, Richard Borek Foundation, 2017
The Lower Saxony city of Braunschweig was one of the largest medieval cities in Northern Germany. It served as the residence of Welf rulers during the High Middle Ages and was one of the leading Hanseatic cities in the 14th and 15th centuries. Despite all the losses, particularly from the destruction of World War II, Braunschweig still presents itself today as a treasure trove of medieval architecture and art. This publication presents this magnificent cultural heritage for the first time in its architectural and urban historical contexts. Special attention is given to the unique phenomenon of the historical urban structure with its five districts. The numerous sacred buildings reflect the significance of Braunschweig in the Middle Ages. Starting from the defining construction of St. Blasii Cathedral, the large city parish churches with their distinctive tower structures emerged. In secular architecture, the Old Town Hall holds a prominent position. A new reconstruction attempt is proposed for the castle of Henry the Lion, which is now a work of historicism. Finally, there is a detailed look at medieval residential buildings – including stone houses, halls, and half-timbered constructions. This lavish volume is complemented by many current photos, numerous historical documents, and plans and reconstruction drawings specially created for this publication.
