When the first mechanical pencils hit the market in the late 1930s, there was a need for a device that sharpened only the lead without damaging the metal casing. The Swiss Georges Dessonnaz from Fribourg developed a pencil sharpener and patented it (Swiss Patent from April 9, 1939, US Patent from May 20, 1941). The initials of his name formed the designation for the sharpener: GEDESS. The drawing from the patent document does not show the current design, which has been in use since around 1944, but the basic idea has remained intact.
