"Winnetou Part 1," released in 1963, is one of the most successful films in German cinema history. For many fans, it represents the pinnacle of the film series about the Apache chief Winnetou and his blood brother Old Shatterhand. In the 1960s and 70s, the film series attracted over 40 million fans to theaters in Germany alone. Rialto Film GmbH Berlin, as the producer, is now publishing the complete screenplay for this film for the first time. At the same time, they have made their film archive accessible, providing a unique insight into the creation of this still-popular movie. Over 360 pages detail its realization, from the initial concept draft to the finished screenplay, including additions and changes made during filming, both textually and visually. Each scene of the screenplay is compared and explained with over 300 mostly large-format images showcasing its cinematic implementation. What changes were made to the screenplay on location in then-Yugoslavia? What was not filmed? Which scenes were shot but did not make it to the cinema? Includes a foreword by Mario Adorf.
