The New Testament scholar Gerhard Lohfink recounts his childhood during the Nazi era and World War II, his theology studies in Frankfurt am Main and Munich, his experiences as a priest and pastoral caregiver, his further studies in Würzburg, his time as a professor in Tübingen, and the years that followed up to the present day. However, intertwined with this narrative of his life, he addresses, in his own exciting and vivid manner, questions that play a crucial role in every Christian life: the question of truth in the Bible, the role of reason in Christian faith, and how to relate to God when it comes to real life decisions. In the final part of his book, he confronts the increasingly pressing and challenging question of how Christian faith can endure in a world filled with hatred, war, and destruction.
