Running away is initially a normal problem-solving behavior and not a deviant form of coping with life for boys and girls. The detachment from childhood attachments and the dynamics of gaining independence during adolescence rarely proceed smoothly; they often escalate into crisis-laden confrontations with direct caregivers. The act of running away among boys seems to be less associated with deviant definitions compared to that of girls. When boys run away from home, this behavior is still somewhat accepted within the framework of their gender role. The search for the unknown and the confrontation with new experiences promise freedom and independence for male existence. Breaking out and stepping into a hostile world is part of the male principle. Thus, boys' running away can be explained by the demands placed on their social gender.
