Globalization has changed the state and its institutions, and the relationship between direct democracy and international law is experienced as more conflictual today than it was at the beginning of the 21st century. Migration movements raise new questions of minority protection and coexistence, and the adequate protection of communication freedoms as well as privacy poses multiple challenges in the age of Big Data, fake news, and artificial intelligence. What do all these changes mean for Switzerland's constitutional law as a basic and framework order? Twenty years after the new Federal Constitution came into force on January 1, 2000, this collaborative work by professors of constitutional law teaching at Swiss universities subjects Swiss constitutional law to a fundamental review. The authors do not comment on individual constitutional articles, but devote themselves to basic reflection in thematically structured and manageable reading units. The contributions are intended to stimulate reflection and to place questions of constitutional law in a broader historical and cultural context. The international dimension is included as well as the constitutional law of the cantonal and municipal level. In addition, the comparative law perspective allows Swiss peculiarities to be viewed in a new light. The work aims not only to provide answers, but also to raise new questions pointing to the future.
