Das Museum Rietberg Zürich und Elsy Leuzinger

Under Elsy Leuzinger's leadership, the Museum Rietberg Zurich became a complex and internationally linked institution, and the collection was considerably expanded thanks to important donors and selected acquisitions. In addition, Leuzinger activated the Rietberg Society, co-founded ICOM Switzerland, and simultaneously established the art history of East Asia at the University of Zurich. This volume provides new insights into the work of this Zurich pioneer by evaluating sources from various archives for the first time. Heidi Tacier-Eugster traces how Elsy Leuzinger became an art ethnologist and worked scientifically on the objects in the collection. In doing so, the author sheds light on the history of European and Swiss knowledge and culture as well as the position of women in the 20th century.
