In his new book, Cees Nooteboom embarks on journeys once again. These are sea voyages, and the reader will quickly realize: traveling by ship is a different experience. The slowness of the ship influences the traveler's perception and leads to a unique way of recording experiences. Nooteboom, who signed on as a deckhand for a voyage to the Caribbean in the late fifties and has since developed travel writing into a respected literary genre, takes the reader on a journey through numerous real, as well as literary and philosophical, regions of our world in his new book. The journey spans from Mauritius and Réunion to South Africa, around Cape Horn to Montevideo, and through Argentina to Bolivia. Other travels take him to the northernmost and southernmost cities on Earth, as well as to India and Australia.
