Product details

Bogdan Staschinski was a talented but internally torn KGB agent. His story is deeply intertwined with the history of Germany and Ukraine during the Cold War, just like the stories of his victims. On the orders of the KGB chief in Moscow and the chairman of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, Staschinski carried out assassinations in Munich in 1957 and 1959 against the Ukrainian exiles Lew Rebet and Stepan Bandera. In his memoirs, the West Ukrainian KGB agent recounts why he joined the Soviet secret service, how his training in Kyiv and Moscow went, how he spied on the nationalist underground in Western Ukraine, and how he tracked down the assassin of the Ukrainian-Soviet cultural writer Jaroslaw Halan. He also reflects on how the assassinations in Munich allegedly took a psychological toll on him, how his love for Inge Pohl changed his attitude towards the Soviet Union, and what ultimately led him to turn his back on one of the most brutal secret services of that time.
